Zohran Mamdani Promises a 'Dawn' for NYC in First Speech
During an inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” America's largest city, declaring “a new era” and an bold commencement to his administration.
An Unprecedented Mayor
The new political star, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.
Ignoring counsel to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”
Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles
Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.
The ceremony was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.
A Sweeping Policy Agenda
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:
- Subsidized daycare
- Free buses
- A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
- A experiment of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Facing External Challenges
The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.
Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly friendly.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.
As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
