Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Win at Irish Side Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever continental campaign, Crystal Palace are learning very quickly. Missing star figures like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable win that virtually secures them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure straight entry to the knockout stages, particularly following a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This occasion offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the account with a well-taken finish. Forward Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second game in succession.
A Shelbourne side that had finished their domestic season were no match even for a largely rotated Palace outfit. The visitors were further weakened by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are out with knee problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, let Nketiah to lay on Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, driving a long-range shot over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on desperately. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of agricultural tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Contest
The match was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before coolly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
After the break, manager Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest key individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Replacement Romain Esse almost scoring his first touch, only to see his shot blocked.
The youngster was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one shot strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche then missed a glaring chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This paved the way for 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to earn his senior debut, rounding off an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
