No fewer than thirteen individuals perish and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this accident,” declared the country's president.

The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated speed, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an prompt pause in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a full safety audit. The party declared that the situation "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the construction and running of these national projects.
