Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience as opposed to another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a announcement clip is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and arguably it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—traits that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, enabling players to find creative solutions in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be completed in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
