Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "weak men".

Stokes delivered those words in multiple interviews following his team's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable team. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
