"When are you interviewing Haim?" an inquiry arrives. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their fourth member."

However, there remains a single issue: I also desires to be the Haims' newest recruit. And we're far from alone. Multiple high-profile supporters have also coveted the honor.

One thing is obvious a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their path playing gigs at local delicatessens with their parents. Now they're multiple Grammy Award hopefuls.

Like all the greatest ensembles, they're a tight-knit trio. Their visuals often show them walking in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they perform with such pure joy you can't help but think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That is the greatest compliment. That's an award in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to make music."

"And thus all are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Historic Milestone

The band are connecting from their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been shortlisted for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I follow the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like The Truman Show when your name is read out," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the accolade resonates with the band.

"We truly set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," adds Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that came before us."

Personal Turmoil and Humour

The album was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that unique liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The words detail endings and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the relationships they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they want to be.

"I adore description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Sound

That newfound toughness demanded a new sound – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Percussion is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Camaraderie

The trio's candor inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters shared some of their romantic misadventures.

One man ended things with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's no hope," explains Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more assured of their place in the rock pantheon.

They're major draws, with hit albums and an worldwide fan base.

Yet the band will always be their top focus.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "There is no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've gotten here and we're still making music."
